Go and Karuta

This was such a long day.... it started of with me reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I have actually read it before, but after watching my mother see the movie like every fucking day the last month I just got angry with all the differences from the book and then I didn't remember all the differences so I decided to read it again. After all, it's a book that you can't help yourself from enjoying it, I love how she talks about attitudes and examines human nature.

But after that I was reading my daily manga updates when this manga called my attention, it's called Chihayafuru and it's a sports manga about this strange japanese game named Karuta. Karuta it's a game like memory but HARDER. You got cards like this with japanese characters.
The japanes charactes in a card are actually the last part of a japanese poem. So you line this cards up in the floor (they are like fifty in the actual game but there are actually 100 cards with a poem each that you should memorize to win) between you and your opponent and the half closest to you is the one with cards you should grab and the other is your oppenent's. Then someone starts reciting the first half on a poem and you should grab the card with the last part of the poem before your oppenent. The tricky part is that you should remember where each card is, and japanese characters are even hard for japanese people so they are hard to identify sometimes. The way to win is recognize the card by just hearing the first phonem of the poem, but it takes a lot of practice! Of course the actual game is more complicated and it has some other rules and strategies. A game of kurata looks something like this:
Look how they throw the cards! This probably are pros and do it really fast.

But after I read this I looked for a similar manga and ended up reading Hikaru no Go from the same author of Death Note (I didn't know that at first). This manga is surprisingly addicting and made me learn the names and strategies of a lot of things regarding Go.
In most western countries this game is probably weird, but there's actually a world championship. I happened to learn it when I was little and going to advanced math classes in the university. The Go club there apparently thought that smart kids were good for playing this and my math teachers probably thought that it was good practice for the brain... The game is about how one player has one color each and puts the rocks in such a way that gains them more territory. In the picture look how the black rocks are somehow surrounding the enemy, by doing this they gain territory. It's kind of hard to explain, you have to watch an actual game! But although it looks simple, it actually requires a lot of strategy. The old geezer that taught me was freaking good and beat me everytime while playing other people. But I remember that out of everyone he said he liked my strategy because I used unexpected moves.. hehe The thing is that it's really fun and you should try it sometime, online even, now I have to go to sleep because I want to change my habit of waking up at noon.... haha : P

Toast

Today one of my aunts visited, and it was really nice seeing someone that I almost never have a chance to see. Also, I just recently found out that I'll be going with my family on some vacations before I begin school again. I can't tell you how much I like that! there's nothing better than going out and getting rid of all the stress before an hectic senior year!

In the afternoon, I had a mini-marathon with my sister while she catched up with old movies she hadn't seen (because she's such a workaholic that can't seem to find time in a whole year to see movies...). And we saw movies like Remember Me and Toast.

And because it seemed to be about food I prepared cake and eggnog to see it with, haha. But it was really nice, although a bit old, but even if they aren't very famous, english movies always seem to be really good and great to pass a good time.

27.12.11

Another Earth

I watched this movie today. It was unexpectedly good, I actually expected something depressing like Melancholia, but I was hooked throughout the movie and I really liked the plot! Of course, it also has great shots and effects. It's about how they find out that there is an exact replica of the earth near them and how they deal with it. But is most about this girl that is looking for some atonement for something terrible she did and how this situation turns out to be the perfect solution. Check it out! you won't be dissapointed.

25.12.11

Merry Christmas!!!

I hope you had a great time! In my case, I enjoyed Christmas like I hadn't done in a long time. I had great company, great food and amazing gifts. I've been stuffing myself with food since yesterday and I'm loving every second of it.

Yesterday I met some friends from my sister that are from Taiwan and I talked to them with a combination of english, spanish and signs with my hands, it was really fun, I learned a lot about their culture and I learned a lot about theirs. Now, I even know how to say some words in chinese! During the day we also met a lot of friends and celebrated in many ways. I'm really glad that I managed to have a great time after having really depressing christmases the past years. :D

Playing in the Shadows

I have alredy told you that the latest album from Example is awesome, but now that I have heard all the songs closely I'm REALLY obsessed with it. Now I'll just spread their awesomeness with you! (there are a lot of songs but this are my favourites)

First, I'll start with the most known. Changed The Way You Kiss Me and Stay Awake.

Btw, Stay Awake was the reason that made me listen to the whole album. The video, the lyrics, the beat, are better than Changed the Way You Kiss Me.

This one, Midnight Run, is the latest single and I hadn't noticed until someone mentioned it in the youtube comments, but he must have insomnia or trouble sleeping because two of his songs have something to do with it like, midnight run and stay awake, haha! ;D

Just listen to the lyrics of the song, they are SOOOO amazing!!!

The lyrics of this one are also great! Seriously, I have just been replaying this two songs all the time since I got the album! a GREAT album!!

17.12.11

Music Update

I've been listening to really good albums while I waste my time. They're probably not the newest albums, but they are some of the best in my opinion.

First, is Playing In The Shadows by Example. This is my favourite one, I just love the beat and the vocals!!

Second, is the album 21 by Adele. And I assume that if you live in this world you have alredy heard some of her songs and know how incredible her voice and lyrics are.

Finally, is Bright Eyes with their latest album The People's Key. It's really amazing and my favorite song is Jejune Stars.

I also listened to Foster the People and The xx. Here are some of my latest favorite songs:

This two songs are from the latest album from Foster The People that's called Torches.

And this is Basic Space by The xx.

And for the end, I'll share with you this amazing house music by swedish group Mange Makers. Their videos are both hysterical and epic at the same time, check them out!

haha... hilarious.. ; )

11.12.11

Update

I've been sleeping a lot today, thankfully, and reading manga. The past days I had been watching Gossip Girl nonstop until I arrived at season 3. Right now I'm checking out music and I have a few songs to share:

Her singing is amazing!

This song is simply too adicting...

9.12.11

I'll Try Anything Once

So for an update, I'll just say that I've been watching like ten chapters of Gossip Girl today and right now I'm on the second season. But seriously, it's so addictive that even my brother is watching it now and he likes it even if he hates to admit it, he's so hooked up with all the Blair/Chuck and Lily/Rufus drama, haha.

And I had also forgot to tell you that I watched the movie Somewhere by Soffia Coppola some months ago, because after all she's my favorite movie director, but the thing is that I saw the movie and it proved to be really existencialist (more than her past movies) and I just realized until today that one of the songs of the movies is sang by Julian Casablancas from The Strokes. But is not weird that I didn't realized until today because he sounds totally different in this version, but in a good way! : D His voice sounds so nice, seriously!!!!

The Help

After my movie marathon this weekend with my brother and sister this was the movie I liked the most!! I think it's an oscar contender or something and it really deserves it. It's serious and funny at the same time. And I can't help but think if that's exactly what always happens in my country, because I can't help but see what sometimes some people do to their maids, even in my own family!, I've clearly seen maids with hate in their eyes after someone treated them like shit, and they are always accusing them of being thieves. (I've also seen people not letting them using anything inside the house, like the bathroom, or regulating how much they talk on the telephone). And let's face it, sometimes they are the ones who raise their children, one time I even saw the son of a well know politician treating his maid in a very innapropiate way and she couldn't do something against him! The same thing goes for chaffeurs and bodyguards because I've seen some of my friends spending all their free times with them, going togheter to the movies, eating out and telling them of all their problems. But it's also nice when you see someone getting along with them and even treating them like family.

Well... enough about this. Something really funny happened today, I was watching the first season of Gossip Girl and my mother stoped by to see what I was watching and before I knew she was watching all the chapters with me, you could her asking me things like: "So Blair was going out with Nate but then cheated him with Chuck right? And Lily van der Woodsen was going out with Dan's father before he married Allison? and now they are going out togheter again?" and things like that, the only difference is that she was refering to them like the blond girl (Serena), the evil one (Blair), the stepbrother of the blond girl (Chuck), the ex of the evil girl that is best friend of the blond one (Nate), and I guess you can imagine how it goes, haha. And just like that I had finished watching the first season. Tomorrow I'll probably watch the second season, probably with my mom... haha.

This is the song that I have in my head right now, I just love how she sings!

5.12.11

Heroine Shikkaku and Strobe Edge

Okay, so if you've been reading this blog for a while you probably know that I read a lot of shoujo mangas and my ABSOLUTE favorite is Strobe Edge like I've told you HERE and HERE. But if I have to be truthful, my second most favorite one is Heroine Shikkaku, and I like it because is really down to earth and I just adore the main character. Actually, I have spent a lot of time praising it before and you can find that in a previous post HERE. But the real reason why I'm telling you all of this is because I was reading the latest translated chapter of Heroine Shikkaku (and I was loving every second of it) and I was spending like a lot of time just enjoying each page when I suddenly observed a very curious pair in the background:

And I assume it's some kind of inside joke between the authors but I just think it's just soooo cool that the authors know each other!!! And it's like paradise having my two favorite shoujo mangas togheter!!! And it's just no wonder that the author's of two of my favorite mangas know each other after all! haha ;)

4.12.11

You Don't Own The Road

This is such a great song! I actually have always been a little unsure if I like The Kills or not, and after hearing all their old songs I could say that I liked them but I didn't love them. But now, I'm really sure that I ADORE them! The new album is really great and is filled with songs that I really like. Allison Mosshart has a great voice and their sound is great. I can picture myselft dancing along with their songs for a long time alone in my room haha.. But seriously, you have to listen this album!! Is called Blood Pressures btw. ; )

2.12.11

Gossip Girl

Hi! how have you been doing? For my part I finally decided to watch all the chapters from Gossip Girl since the first season and so far I've been loving the clothes! I don't remember if I told you, but I read all the sixteen or something books from Gossip Girl a while ago and I've been wanting to watch the series for a while now even though I know that the chapters are totally diferent to the books... haha but so far so good!

I just updated my ipod and I have some great songs to share with you guys! : D

First is Satan i gatan from Veronica Maggio from her new album with the same name. Her voice is great and her lyrics are really amazing!!

And second is Lykke Li with Everybody But Me. I love her songs and the vibe they give. She is one of my favorite singers right now!!

So now I'll just continue watching Gossip Girl and reading The Oddisey from Homer (which is a great book by the way and the main character Ulysses is such a jerk sometimes!!! he is lucky that the gods are so good to him!). Seeya!!

22.11.11

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour

It's very late here and it' so quiet with everyone sleeping... it's very surreal... I've been trying to sleep earlier so I don't wake up in the afternoon hungry but it's very hard to change bad habits... haha

I needed an easy read so I ended up reading this book, what I like about it is that it includes a playlist of what they are listening while they are on the road and there are mentions of the songs in the books so it feels like I'm inside it. The bad thing is that I think I'm reading too fast so I'm getting behind with the songs and I think they will reach the hundreds soon... mmm... oh whatever! if I have some left when I finish the book I'll just listen to them later!

Yesterday I read Anna and the French Kiss which proved to be not that silly, haha! But in the sense that the girl recognized that it's really embarrasing to be an american and that most of them look really stupid while traveling to another country where the people are more cultured. Also, it's not the clasic book of; Oh! i'm in Paris and I found a cute parising and we fell sooo in love! and we couldn't help ending up together!!! haha... I mean, it's more realistic and I really like the couple especially the guy. I ended up liking it so much that I realized that the author is the same of Lola and the Boy Next Door (that I had read before) and I just realized at that moment when I remembered that Lola had some friends named Anna and St. Clair and I figured out that they were the same. And I tell you, it suddenly made sooo MUCH SENSE!!!! So I opened the ebook and searched it for any part where their names appeared and then I read those parts all over again! haha

It was very fun!

19.11.11

The Tree of Life

Yesterday I watched this movie with Brad Pitt. I had heard that you needed a lot of patience to watch this movie and it's really true! The introduction lasts like forty minutes and the only good thing is that you get to watch a lot of beautiful scenes.

I think this movie is made to make you think about life and the loss of innocence. It's really artistic so you have to watch it with an open mind. I think it won in cannes so it's worth watching!

15.11.11

BECK or MCS

For almost two days, I spent all my time reading this manga nonstop. And I must say that I had some life-changing revelations. What I liked best is how it starts really simple with a normal lost little boy that finds something worthwhile in his life. I like how all the characters develope and how they overcome obstacles with hard work and a lot of passion!! haha...

But it has some magic that makes it really good and if you look closely you can find a lot of music references from a lot of great bands.
This is a snapshoot I took in a really epic moment of the manga!!! haha

The best is that I can relate to a lot of stuff they are talking about and it somehow helps me to overcomes problems in my life. It also reaches a point of the story where I just cried. I like this kind of stories....

8.11.11

Ready Player One

Right now I'm reading this book by Ernest Cline and I must say that I was craving for a highly addicitive book for a while. In short, THIS BOOK IS REALLY GOOD. And is not your normal futuristic novel, No!, it's a very actual book and every teenager today can relate in some way. Another cool thing is that the main character is a book, something that is very unusual.

The book is a about a boy in a very possible future where every practically lives in an online videogame, he almost never goes outside and has no social skills whatsover. But one day the maker of this game dies and leaves his whole fortune to whoever finds three keys that will open an secret easter egg that he left encoded in the game. But to do that he has to have a lot of knowledge of the culture in the 80's.

There are a lot of geeky references relating to videogames, music, comics, tv shows and computers, and I understand most of them thanks to having a lot of geeky friends and that is what makes the book even better for me!

Now getting back in my life, I haven't been updating a lot probably because I'm enjoying my life too much right now. But I have taken time to visit friends and seeing my family by going to the country club. I'll do a music update later but I'll probably divide it up because it's a LOT!!!

21.10.11

Midnight in Paris

I watched a lot of movies yesterday but this was by far my favourite. This is the first movie from Owen Wilson that I've liked and that is saying a lot!!! Whoever wrote this script has my respect! The movie mixes the magic of being in Paris with it's great history. And it's about how Owen Wilson travels to the past meeting all the artists and writers that he has always admired. All the references of great artists makes it even more amazing although you need to have some knowledge about many artists and writers to understand all the jokes, but I just laughed really hard. My favorite one was Dalí, it was really funny. You have to watch it!
Here's Adrien Brody who played Salvador Dalí. haha
I also watched the movie Into the Wild. I finally know what it is about! because somehow I'm never able to pass the first chapter of the book. This is one of the few remakes where I prefer the movie. haha... But I also have to check out the movie On the Road from the book of Jack Kerouac that's coming out next year.
And for last, there is Captain America that somehow became the first marvel movie that I actually like! I really like this heroe and I'm looking forward to the movie Avengers that is coming out next year.

And apart from these, I also watched other movies yesterday but somehow they're not worthy of being spoken about, muahaha,I'm kind of evil... haha... well I'm just going to make a small mention of Diary of a Wimpy Kid that turned out better than I expected but I'm still not reading that book. ; )

13.10.11

Islands - The XX

Yesterday I was listening to a big playlist with the best indie songs sice 2000 and I randomely heard this song from The xx, and I think I had heard it before but I'm not sure, but what's amazing is that some hours after I finished hearing the playlist, I didn't even remember the song or who sang it, I just had the song stuck in my head. I was surprised because it's been a while since I've had a song stuck like that so I just wrote the lyrics that I knew in google and you could guess my surprise and pleasure when I found out that the song was from The xx and if you've read my posts before you should know that I absolutely love them!

The coolest part is that today I had been talking with a friend about the awesomeness of their songs so this has just make my day a very good day!!!

Btw, the video is just amazing!!!

11.10.11

Melancholia

In the weekend I watched the movie Melancholia by Lars von Trier who is danish. The movie ended up being very depressing but artistic, although it proved my patience at the beginning and I was really tired after celebrating Oktoberfest so I couldn't appreciate it fully. But I really liked the end!

I'm kind of bored right now and I can't wait for school to end. I'm alredy planning what I want to do but while doing it I kind of space out so I'm not fun to hang around this days. I want and at the same time don't want this year to be over. It's just because I'm to lazy to decide what I want to study at the university.... yawn.... I'm getting bored thinking about it... I'll better go to sleep! adios!!

10.10.11

Foki

I was just thinking that swedish blogger Foki resembles older Mikako from the mangas Gokinjo Monogatari and Nana written by Ai Yazawa.
But not so much in the physical way, but I think they are alike in how they change their hair color so much and how both love to design clothes and have become succesful with their designs. I think Foki is amazing because she's so young and she has achieved so much by doing what she loves! If you want to check out her blog, you can find it HERE!!!

8.10.11

Emma

I just saw the movie Emma released in 1996 based in the book by Jane Austen. Emma was played by Gwineth Paltrow and I liked it very much! After all Emma is my most favourite book by Jane Austen.

6.10.11

Petra Karlsson

I forgot to tell you that I'm following a new fashion blog written by a fourteen year old girl from Umeå, Sweden.
This girl has an amazing fashion sense even though she's so young and she's really beautiful. I love how she dresses in a simple way by matching everything together in a great way. When I look at her looks I can imagine myself looking like that so it's a great way to find inspiration.
This last look it's my favourite (I should get a cardigan like that... or thights like that... or shoes like that... haha) and her hairstyle is amazing, I'll try it out one of this days.... : D

You can find her blog HERE! although the blog is written in swedish you can translate it with google. But personally I prefer to read it in swedish but I guess not everybody knows swedish... you should learn it, it's such a beautiful language!!! And Petra is also very good at photography! so you can always look at beautiful pictures. I wish I lived in the countryside so I could take photos like that but sadly I'm only surrounded by a big and ugly city... : (

El Zorro

ZorroZorro by Isabel Allende

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This books is surprisingly good!, even though you expect to read the exact same story as the movie with Antonio Banderas but you end up with something completely different but good. The storyline keeps you gripping the book with a fast narration that surprises you every time. And it traps you inside the world of California in the 1800's. You accompany the main character to Spain during the reign of Jose de Bonaparte (the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte) while many countries struggle for their independence after the french revolution.

Diego de la Vega is caught between two different views of the world and he ends up choosing justice for the unfurtunate. He is also in love with the unattainable Juliana. He faces many adventures along the way and makes you wish for him to have a happy ending. I ended up enjoying it a lot and it's even better if you read it in it's original language, spanish.

This is my review of "El Zorro: La Leyenda Comienza" in goodreads. This week I also read the longer version of Pride and Prejudice.
Honestly, I hadn´t even realized that I had read a shorter version before, I realized because I decided to read the book again after watching the movie and I realized that there were parts that I hadn't read before, and it was kind of obvious because the version I just read had like 580 pages and the version I had read before had less than 200 pages. haha

Well, I'm glad that I'm finally able to update the blog after a VERY stressful week. I'm finishing this school year after all but all the teacher left a lot of stuff to do for the end and now they are piling everything together.... : (

Now I'll just read manga and listen to good music! yay!

28.9.11

Remember Me

I just saw one of the most shocking endings ever!!! But I'm not going to tell you about it, I'm not a movie-spoiler after all... haha But I'm just going to tell you that it was amazing and that it left me crying, which I almost never do and because of that some people think that I'm cold (I'm definitely NOT!) I just cry for good reasons.

And it's so good that it even makes me like Robert Pattinson's acting and I soo like his clothes in this film! He's so much better when he doesn't look unnaturally pale!

Right now I'm listening to this song named Ghost of Stephen Foster by Squirrel Nut Zippers. It's amazing.. haha

Someone like you

Someone Like YouSomeone Like You by Sarah Dessen

I think this book is really different to the rest of her books and I was surprised in a good way. I started reading it on a whim and didn´t stop after some hours when I finished it. I kind of expected her usual developmentes that seem to trap you in, but instead I got very real situations (like always...) like someone getting pregnant, problems with parents, sexual relationships with your boyfriend and that sometimes there are different endings. I just love how her characters learn to see life in a different way and how they learn to overcome problems. She's certainly my favorite YA author.

I just reviewed this book in goodreads after finishing reading it. I'm also listening to this awesome song... Loca people

Mansfield Park

I just finished reading Mansfield Park from Jane Austen and I better write what I think about it now before I forget what I intended to say about it. haha... First of all this book is very different to her earlier novels like Pride and Prejudice. First of all Fanny Price (the main character) doesn't have a strong character unlike previous characters from other novels and she is used by everyone for their own convenience. It mainly shows the difference in economical status and how certain nasty attitudes were overlooked if you had enough money. But even if it starts like this, eventually her uncle and his family that used to think lowly of her learn that certain things that they did to her were wrong. Her only ally, her cousin Edmund, is the only one that defends her but it's eventually blinded by Miss Crawford and her brother that arrive to make their lives difficult.

There are a lot of nasty characters that you just can't stand and make you want to close the book, and the beginning of the book sometimes gets to test your patience with its boredoom and the annoying ways they treat Fanny. But as the book goes on, the family finally learn to appreciate her for all that she has went through. Nasty characters are put in their place and everything has a happy ending. And it's also the first of her books that leaves you with very important moral wisdoms.

Indie Albums & Small Earthquake

Today there were a lot of small earthquakes here and the stronger was of 6.1. So yeah... scary. So I've been hearing indie music while I read Mansfiel Park from Jane Austen and this are some cool covers from the albums.
ok.... that's enough... haha or I'll fill the entire page with album covers. I especially like the last one from Beirut.

11.9.11

Modest Mouse and 3MSC

This are some snapshots from the movie I saw tonight. It's a spanish movie called "3 Metros Sobre el Cielo" or if I traduced it would be Three meters above heaven. And the most funny thing it's that I only decided to see it because my friends had been talking to me about this movie forever and they really wanted me to see it because they thought it was amazing. At first, I didn't like the guy at all with his arrogant attitude but at the end he won me over to say the least. You really have to see it!!!!

This is one of my favourite parts of the movie, it's in spanish though, but I think that just the way they act tells everything and the song is amazing! haha...

I have actually spent all my day reading books, manga, this movie, but more importantly I stopped everything I was doing to watch how the elections in my country were going. Because even if I can't still vote, I'm really interested in everything that is happening and I still have hope in the democratic process in a third world country like this. After all, anything could happen today, any minute I could hear that something violent is happening due to the elections and my family is out there. So while I wait doing a lot of stuff my soundtrack is by Modest Mouse. ^^
I'm hearing the album: Good News for People Who Love Bad News
And We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

Sophie's World

I'm very tired to say the least, I've been reading Sophie's World. It has more than five hundred pages but it's filled with philosophical stuff so it's kinda hard to understand all at one so I just take my time to think it through....
Have a nice day! I'll go to sleep now...
