Diary - Chuck Palahniuk

Amazon´s Review: With a first page that captures the reader hook, line and sinker, Palahniuk (Choke; Lullaby) plunges into the odd predicament of Waytansea Island resident and ex-art student Misty Marie Kleinman, whose husband, Peter, lies comatose in a hospital bed after a suicide attempt. Rooms in summer houses on the mainland that Peter has remodeled start to mysteriously disappear-"The man calling from Long Beach, he says his bathroom is missing"-and Misty, with the help of graphologist Angel Delaporte, discovers that crude and prophetic messages are scrawled across the walls and furniture of the blocked-off chambers. In her new world, where every day is "another longest day of the year," Misty suffers from mysterious physical ailments, which only go away while she is drawing or painting. Her doctor, 12-year-old daughter and mother-in-law, instead of worrying about her health, press her to paint more and more, hinting that her art will save exclusive Waytansea Island from being overrun by tourists. In the meantime, Misty is finding secret messages written under tables and in library books from past island artists issuing bold but vague warnings. With new and changing versions of reality at every turn, the theme of the "tortured artist" is taken to a new level and "everything is important. Every detail. We just don't know why, yet."

MY personal opinion: Honestly I had tried to read this book before in vain... I just started the first page and then got bored instantly. haha... But today for some strange reason I was in the mood to read a strange and twisted book.

At the beginning you just get confused with the prose he uses and the strange events that happen around her. The prose is not exactly a page turner but it´s very unusual. Then you get like a nightmarish feeling and you also find out all this strange facts that normal people don´t care to know. I´m not particularly fond of the main character because she lacks courage and common sense. Even a small child would have found out that the medicine the doctor gave her was poison, mainly after the fact that the police man warned her. Then she get clues everywhere but she is just plain dumb! And how she even started to go out with her gay husband is beyond me!!! I think the author is trying to give the book an artistic and horror book feeling but he just fails when creating strong characters. I could have never finished reading without good music, some much needed pauses and the fact that the book was not very long. It´s so boring and strange that I just finished reading it because I´m not in my normal state of mind!!!

Final Rating: 4/10
